Overview

This Track is for individuals interested or involved in small or mid-sized projects. One can expect to improve their skills in managing successful projects, and being a project manager or project team member. Project management training prepares the individual to lead and manage projects, negotiate and resolve conflicts, manage risks and change, build and motivate project teams, and assure project control and successfully close projects.

Course Description

This course examines project management roles and environments, the project life cycle, and various techniques of work planning, and control and evaluation to achieve project objectives. The tools currently available to project managers are illustrated in this course through the use of Microsoft® Project software.

Concepts of Project Management

  • Define the roles and responsibilities of a Project Manager (PM).
  • Define the characteristics of a project.
  • Identify the life cycle process elements in project management.
  • Identify a project selection process.

Project Management Process

  • Define the steps in developing a project management plan.
  • Develop a risk-assessment plan for a project.
  • Develop a work breakdown structure (WBS) to achieve expected project outcome.
  • Produce a Gantt chart and network flow diagram to schedule the completion of work elements.
  • Explain the relationship among schedules, resources, scope, and expected outcome.

Resource Allocation

  • Apply time (schedule), quality (scope), and cost (budget) to the assignment of project resources.
  • Develop a decision-making process to respond to changes in schedule, resources, scope, and expected outcome.
  • Identify problem-solving tools and techniques that may be utilized to address project challenges.

Monitoring Systems

  • Develop a monitoring system to control schedule, resources, scope, and team performance.
  • Measure earned value (EV), cost performance index (CPI), and schedule performance index (SPI).
  • Identify methods for conflict management.

Project Analysis and Termination

  • Apply a project-termination process to a project plan.
  • Develop a resource transition plan.
  • Identify possible causes of project success and failure.
  • Produce a completed project management plan.
